For those new to type 1 diabetes technology

“Should I tech?”: For those new to (or considering) T1D technology

There have been a number of new technologies that have reshaped the management of diabetes over the last few decades. This session, hosted by Dr Jane Overland, will discuss how these different technologies – including continuous and flash glucose monitoring, diabetes apps, SmartPens and automated insulin delivery devices – can help you in your day to day life living with type 1 diabetes.

Your diabetes-life balance: Recognising (and coping with) diabetes distress – 11.30am (AEST)

In this session, Sarah Lam will introduce “diabetes-life balance” as a starting point for good diabetes self-care.

People living with type 1 diabetes have to juggle competing priorities. They can feel overwhelmed, making diabetes even harder to live with and manage. But the balancing act of diabetes is more sustainable when we’re prioritising our emotional AND physical health – sometimes finding that balance can result in better diabetes self-care than simply focussing on diabetes!

This presentation will look at the signs that our diabetes-life balance is unbalanced, and ways of working towards equilibrium. We’ll learn to notice when our emotional health may be negatively affecting our physical health or quality of life, and take action to address it.

The challenges inherent in newer technologies will be addressed.

Feel strong & achieve your exercise & body goals: The elephants in the room – 2pm (AEST)

Reaching your body goals with type 1 diabetes – whether you want to lose weight, tone up or work on your strength – can feel like an impossible feat with a myriad of barriers. More often than not, these barriers are unspoken about in clinical settings, while being simultaneously misrepresented in media. This means those living with type 1 can feel alone and confused when it comes to their weight or body goals.

Andi Balog will look at these issues, offering practical advice and tips to help you achieve your goals.

Re-thinking exercise & T1D: Making exercise simple – 2.45pm (AEST)

Let’s make exercising with type 1 diabetes simple: take back control of your health and wellbeing and feel a freedom around your ability to participate in exercise.

It’s common for those with T1D to feel as though they lack the understanding or education they need in order to safely and effectively manage their blood glucose levels before, during and after exercise.

In this presentation Sam Rooney will introduce key concepts and ways of thinking that will help simplify your approach to exercise. Rather than just telling you what to do, Sam will provide you with the skills on how to think through your exercise. You’ll leave with more confidence to participate in exercise, and an understanding that exercise is about far more than managing blood sugars and doing it “because you should”.

Do you realise how important you really are? – 2pm (AEST)

Parental (or carer) wellbeing influences everyone’s adjustment to life with diabetes!

As we face the ongoing demands of diabetes management it’s vital to understand our own responses in times of stress, and to care for our own mental health. By doing this we’re better able to build resilience, as an individual and as a family.

In this session, Simone Collins and Elissa Jacobs, authors of JDRF’s soon-to-be-released parent wellbeing guide, will support you to understand the impact of caring for a child or adolescent living with T1D and look at the skills and strategies parents can use to look after themselves, during these naturally challenging times. After all, a little hope and self-compassion can go a long way.
