The real health concerns of people living with T1D (including mature-aged adults) – 11.40am (AEST)

Of the estimated 130,000 Australians with T1D, two-thirds are 40 or older, and a third are 60 or older (only about 12% are under 21). And although there are many challenges for people of all ages with T1D, there are few resources especially for mature-aged people with diabetes.

Prof Alicia Jenkins will look at this area and age group, including the results of co-designed surveys regarding their specific concerns and priorities (and noting the many similarities across age groups). This knowledge and these resources are the key to optimal wellbeing and healthy aging.

Staying calm and connected during family chaos: understanding your influence as a parent – 2.45pm (AEST)

The launch of JDRF’s parent wellbeing guide has started conversations with parents around the impact of carrying such a high mental load when loving and caring for a child or adolescent with T1D.

Managing self-care and building your own resilience is essential, but how do we stay connected and calm when the chaos is internal as well as external?

This session, by Simone Collins and Elissa Jacobs, will touch on the protective factor of connection, and look at how we can loan our calm to our children and teens when emotion regulation is challenging to master, and the ever-present shadow of anxiety interferes with everyday functioning and successful relationships.
