What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong autoimmune disease that destroys the body’s ability to process sugar by attacking the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin helps convert sugar into the fuel that our bodies need. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream in life-threatening amounts. Since people with T1D cannot produce insulin naturally, they must take it either through multiple daily injections or from an insulin pump.
More about T1DImproving lives each day until a cure.
While we search for a cure we are working to improve the lives of millions of Australians impacted by T1D. We fast-track new treatments and technology, and advocate for financial support for those who need it most.
We’ve been part of every breakthrough in T1D care in the last 45 years.
