Welcome to the next chapter of our story

JDRF is undergoing a global rebrand and moving to a new name, ‘Breakthrough T1D’. There are JDRFs all around the world, and some of them have already made the switch. In Australia, we’re holding off until March 2025, and you can expect to see the name brand new and visual identify across our website and social media channels then.

The reason for the rebrand is that our organisation was established over 50 years ago, and over that time, we – and the world – have evolved. So has type 1 diabetes (T1D) science and our understanding of it.

Type 1 diabetes was once often called “juvenile diabetes”, which is where we got our name, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). But we know that the condition doesn’t just affect children, and that it can be diagnosed at any age. Research has shown us that the JDRF brand, and especially its name, no longer resonates with our T1D community members and potential supporters.

This is why, after a lengthy research and consultation process with feedback from the T1D community, we’re changing our name to Breakthrough T1D. We want to ensure that how we communicate is an accurate reflection of the people we work for and represent, of who we are now, and the incredible breakthroughs being advanced for everyone in the T1D community.

We’re the same organisation; we’ll just have a new name and look.

We’re excited for this new era for our organisation and feel that our new name and look better represents who we are, what we do, and the full spectrum of the community for whom we advocate.

Frequently asked questions

What’s changing?

From approximately March 2025, JDRF Australia will become Breakthrough T1D. Our name and logo will change, and we’ll look a bit different too, with some new brand colours.

What’s not changing? Our vision of a world without T1D remains. Our mission stays the same, too: to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Why are the changes being made?

Our organisation has had an established brand for over 50 years. Over that time, we – and the world – have evolved. So has type 1 diabetes (T1D) science and our understanding of it.

Type 1 diabetes was once often called “juvenile diabetes”, which is where we got our name, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). We want to ensure that how we communicate is an accurate reflection of our community, of who we are now, and the incredible breakthroughs being advanced for everyone in the T1D community.

We’re the same organisation; we’ll just have a new name and look.

We’re excited for this new era for our organisation and feel that our new name and look better represents who we are, what we do, and the full spectrum of the community for whom we advocate.

Why is JDRF Australia waiting to change its name?

You have may noticed that other JDRF organisations around the world, including JDRF in the United States, are now known as Breakthrough T1D. In Australia, we’re holding off making the change until approximately March 2025. This is because 2024 is a very big year for us, with vital research projects and a significant advocacy campaign underway, and we want to ensure we make the change at a time that makes sense for us.

Why was the new name chosen?

We undertook a lengthy consultation process and gathered feedback from the T1D community to decide on our new name.

A “breakthrough” is a scientific discovery in research. It also signifies our ability to break through barriers, advance progress and move the entire T1D community forward – which is exactly what we aim to achieve.

The name ‘Breakthrough T1D’ invites all audiences to progress together. It promises impacts large and small, from scientific breakthroughs and advocacy wins, to breaking through everyday obstacles.
