KIDSAC, the bag for kids and teens diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
The free KIDSAC bag supports families after a child or teen has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
When a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), it can be a very challenging time for the whole family.
JDRF’s KIDSAC pack aims to help support families in this difficult period, offering practical information, helpful products, and comfort to the child.
What’s in a KIDSAC pack?
The KIDSAC pack itself is a quality backpack. The packs are best known for including our cuddly teddy bear, Rufus, the Bear with Diabetes:
- cuddly and soft, Rufus has special patches that allow kids to practice their glucose tests and injections
- his fun, free app teaches children important lessons about living with type 1 diabetes (read more about the app)
- the pack also includes a picture book that tells Rufus’s story, called Rufus Comes Home.
In your KIDSAC pack, you’ll also find:
- Your T1D organiser, with information about JDRF resources, peer support program, T1Directory and our free online classes for parents
- Caring for Diabetes in Children and Adolescence, a comprehensive practical guide to all aspects of diabetes care
- Australian Carbohydrate Counter, a handy guide to counting carbohydrates
- Rockadex T1D wristband and free Rufus patch
- Diabete-ezy Test wipes starter pack
- hypo treatment pack
- sharps container.
How do I get a KIDSAC pack?
Most children and teens receive their KIDSAC pack at the hospital or diabetes clinic when they’re first diagnosed with T1D.
If your child didn’t receive a KIDSAC at diagnosis, please get in touch and we can send one out to you. You can email us on info@jdrf.org.au or give us a call on 1300 363 126.
