JDRF's Focus Areas

Research.
JDRF has been part of every advancement in type 1 diabetes (T1D) care in the last 50 years. As the world’s largest funder of T1D research, we collaborate, connect and co-ordinate the world’s greatest minds to deliver tangible improvements for the T1D community.

Advocacy.
Through our tireless representation of the challenges facing the T1D community we have, in partnership with our advocates, delivered real change. We have changed how Governments view type 1 diabetes and delivered nearly $500m in new investment in T1D in 10 years.

Community.
A community driven organisation founded to support Australians living with type 1 diabetes, the T1D community is our focus. From first diagnosis through to living with T1D as an adult, our resources, staff, and community are with you each step of the way.

Fundraising.
Changing the world is challenging and expensive. People from a range of backgrounds have provided JDRF significant support, whether it is leaving a bequest or participating in events like the One Walk. These funds have been crucial for supporting research.

What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong autoimmune disease that destroys the body’s ability to process sugar by attacking the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin helps convert sugar into the fuel that our bodies need. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream in life-threatening amounts. Since people with T1D cannot produce insulin naturally, they must take it either through multiple daily injections or from an insulin pump.
