The
JDRF is committed to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and its
complications. We are making extraordinary progress.
JDRF has set
six aggressive and challenging goals to accelerate the pace of research
over the next five years:
- Perfect islet
transplantation - without chronic immune-suppression - to permanently
restore normal blood glucose levels in people with type 1 diabetes.
- Create safe,
stable and widely available "universal donor" sources
of insulin-producing islets for transplantation.
- Regenerate
the body's own beta cells without islet transplantation.
- Perfect
an artificial pancreas.
- Predict,
prevent and reverse complications.
- Prevent
type 1 diabetes by maintaining or restoring immune tolerance in
newly diagnosed patients.
Together we
have made great progress. But there is still to much to be done.
Every day, five more Australians, most of them children, are diagnosed
with this life-changing autoimmune disease.
Your donations
will be devoted to Australia's best and most promising diabetes
research - to preventing or treating the complications that arise
from diabetes (which will help both people with type 1 and type
2 diabetes) and to finding the cure.
JDRF research
has already led to significant breakthroughs in the treatment of
kidney disease and the reversal of complications. We have also seen
advances in the prevention of type 1 diabetes; advances that we
are hopeful will lead to a vaccine to protect children at risk of
developing type 1 diabetes.
We
need your support now.
Our vision for a diabetes-free world is closer than ever.
