Australians
Walk to the Moon for Diabetes Research
September 9, 2005
80,000 people
will 'step out' at locations across Australia on Sunday 16 October,
to collectively walk 400,000 kilometres - that's the same as the
distance between the earth and the moon! Corporate and family teams,
many of whom have been personally affected by type 1 diabetes, have
been fundraising for months for the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation's (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes. It's not too late to
sign up and take part!

Over
140,000 Australians suffer from type 1 diabetes. The most serious
form of diabetes, type 1 diabetes occurs when the body loses its
ability to produce insulin. Generally striking children, it makes
people dependent on multiple injections of insulin every day. It
can't be prevented and there is currently no cure. Many people believe
that insulin is a cure, however, even with insulin type 1 diabetes
can cause severe health problems over time, such as heart disease,
amputations resulting from nerve damage, blindness and kidney failure.
Get together
with friends, family and workmates and form a Walk to Cure Diabetes
team - you'll have fun and help to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

About JDRF:
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the world's largest
not-for-profit supporter of diabetes research, investing $130 million
in the search to find a cure for type 1 diabetes each year. JDRF
was founded in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes,
a disease which strikes people suddenly, makes them dependent on
multiple daily injections of insulin to survive and at risk of devastating
health complications like blindness, kidney failure, heart disease
and amputation.
