What is JDRF?
- JDRF is the
worlds leading nonprofit, non-governmental contributor to
diabetes research.
- JDRFs
mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through
the support of medical research.
- JDRF structures
its research on a business-world model to ensure that resources
are spent most effectively to accelerate progress toward finding
a cure.
- JDRF is the
only major diabetes organisation focused exclusively on research.
Only Research will find a Cure
- Insulin is
not a cure for diabetes nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating
effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation,
heart attack, and stroke.
- Researchers
are closing in on finding a cure for juvenile diabetes, and progress
here could help scientists find a cure for other autoimmune diseases
like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
- JDRFs
research is driven by three broad goals: restoring normal blood
glucose, preventing and reversing diabetes-related complications,
and preventing diabetes and its recurrence.
- Since its
founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes,
JDRF has awarded more than US$1 billion to diabetes research around
the world, including more than US$122 million in FY2006. In FY2006,
JDRF funded 500 centers, grants, and fellowships in 20 countries.
- Since the
year 2000, JDRF has funded around A$97 million of diabetes research
within Australia, with funding of around A$15 million in FY2006.
Dedicated and Active Volunteers are the backbone of JDRF
- JDRF was
founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes
- a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin
dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating
complications.
- Volunteers
help define research priorities, select research grant recipients,
lead advocacy efforts, and provide guidance to overall operations.
- JDRF has
116 chapters and affiliates worldwide, whose volunteers have helped
to raise more than US$1 billon for diabetes research in the last
three decades.
- Most importantly,
JDRF volunteers help raise funds through our Walk to Cure Diabetes,
Jelly Baby campaign and other community activities.
In our mission to find a cure we collaborate with all Diabetes Stakeholders,
including:
- Individuals
with diabetes and their families
- World-leading
diabetes researchers and academic institutions
- Foundations,
corporate partners, individual donors, and volunteers
- Government
agencies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council
(NHMRC)
- Biotech/pharmaceutical
companies
